SUICIDE PREVENTION  TRAINING FOR GATEKEEPERS IN THE COMMUNITY

The Gatekeeper Training, developed by the Suicide Prevention Task Force and Wyoming Department of Health, Mental Health Division, provides information and education about mental illness and suicide.  The training is designed for community “gatekeepers”, that is, utility meter readers, beauticians, postal workers, barbers, maintenance workers and others who come into repeated contact with individuals and notice changes in personality or demeanor.

In addition to providing helpful information and tools for gatekeepers, the training has been presented statewide to professional groups, students, physicians, and participants at multiple conferences.  The material presented is useful to us all in identifying mental illness and suicide risk in our friends and family, and in teaching us what to do when we suspect someone may be suicidal.  Task Force members are available to present the training in your community.  Contact Keith Hotle, State Suicide Prevention Specialist, for further information at 307-777-3318 or keith.hotle@wyo.gov.
